- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef for 7-10 minutes until browned; drain excess fat.
- Sauté finely chopped onion with the cooked beef for 3-4 minutes, seasoning with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Peel and thinly slice the potatoes uniformly.
- Layer half of the potato slices in a greased baking dish, seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Spread the beef and onion mixture over the first potato layer.
- Add the remaining potato slices on top.
- Whisk together milk and melted butter, then pour over the layered ingredients.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes; remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until cheese is bubbly.
- Check doneness of potatoes, allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
